    Joseph Dannenbaum 1859 Cigar Ad
The first known ad of Joseph Dannenbaum that places him in the Pacific Northwest, having immigrated to the US in 1857. The city in the ad is not identified (the Argus served a variety of cities, such as Salem and Oregon City). Joe eventually settled in Walla Walla, Washington Territory, and a court case places him there by at least 1861, possibly before.

    The Elusive Emanuel M. Frank
    The Elusive Emanuel M. Frank
The name Emanuel M. Frank consistently appears in material on the Loupe family. The only connection to the family is in a newspaper article reporting on his suicide where Frank is identified as a second cousin to Jacob Einstein, husband of Delphine Loupe. His name often appears in attendee lists for Loupe, Einstein and Dannenbaum events. The following is a biographical timeline gathered from census material, legal documents and newspaper articles.

    Joseph Dannenbaum: $15,000 Lottery Winner
$15,000 in 1887 is worth about $360,000 in 2010 dollars. From Wikipedia: "The Louisiana State Lottery Company was a private corporation that in the mid-19th century ran the Louisiana lottery. It was for a time the only legal lottery in the United States, and for much of that time had a very foul reputation as a swindle of the state and citizens and a repository of corruption." Charles T. Howard, a founder of the lottery, built a large home on St. Charles Avenue in New Orleans in 1876, reportedly the first home in that city with indoor plumbing. In 1899 the home was purchased by Michael Pokorny, grandfather of Alice Haas, who would marry Joseph Dannenbaum's son, Arthur, in 1902.
First Jewish Wedding in Washington Territory?
First Jewish Wedding in Washington Territory?
Although small numbers of Jews had lived in Washington Territory since 1852, historic records show that those wishing to marry another Jew had left the territory to get married. In this case Joseph Dannenbaum and Adele Loupe brought a rabbi from Umatilla, Oregon, to Walla Walla to conduct the ceremony. The wedding occurred on April 24, 1865, twelve days after President Lincolnís assassination. Julia Eulenberg, who is publishing a history of the early Jews of Washington State, speculates: "My guess about the Rev. Mr. Levy is that he was not an ordained rabbi, but that he could perform weddings, was a shochet and a mohel. The term Rev. has been used to convey that status in other places. So, he immigrated with a group, acquired those skills before or after coming to America, and was hired to use them in various locations. "
