Pianist Allan Bier, 83

 

Celebrated pianist, Allan Bier died Monday night at the age of 83.

 

Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. at Halsted & Co., 1123 Sutter St.

 

Mr. Bier, born in San Francisco, studied in Europe in his youth with the famous Josef Lhevine, Harold Bauer and Vladimir de Pachmann.

 

After a successful debut in Paris in 1914, he returned to San Francisco and made his concert debut here the following year.

 

He later became a soloist with the San Francisco Symphony under conductor Alfred Hertz.

 

Noted for his delicate touch and sensitivity, he is believed to have been the first San Francisco pianist to play Debussy Music locally in public.

 

He was active in the Federal Music Project of the WPA and also as a teacher privately and in institutions.

 

Survivors include his wife, Marcelle; two sons [sic. actually a son and daughter], John A. Bier and Aline Bier; and two grandchildren.
