Elliot Justin Hartman

Loving father, brother and husband, born January 22, 1919 in Oakland, CA, died on October 26, 2008 less than three months prior to his 90th birthday.

Elliot was married in 1940 to Elizabeth Falk Hartman for 55 years until her passing in October 1992. They are survived by two children, Roger Hartman (Judith K. Hartman) and Sally Gordon (Thomas Gordon); six grandchildren Jill Hartman (Timothy McMahon), Karen Tellez-Hartman (Jeff Tellez), Chante Gordon (Michael Mellema), Amie Gordon, Molly Hartman and David Hartman and one great grandchild Declan McMahon. Elliot is also survived by his second wife Judith Q. Hartman who helped ease his passing.

The son of Ellis M. Hartman and Irma W. Hartman, Elliot attended school in Oakland and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Following his military service, he returned to the Bay Area to run family businesses, Little Lady Lingerie Co. in Oakland, and later owned and ran Falk Typography in San Francisco.

A resident of Lafayette from 1947 until moving to Rossmoor around 1988, he was active in local community and service groups. He was a founder, board member and religious school principal of Temple Isaiah in Lafayette. In addition, he was president of the Hidden Valley Improvement Association, and the Diablo Highway Federation. That position led to service on the California Highway Commission, where he participated in the planning and public approval of the freeway system in California. He remained active in community organizations after moving to Rossmoor.

Elliot was an avid boater. In 1958 he took up recreational boating, joining the Diablo Power Squadron (a chapter of the U.S. Power Squadron) where he served for 50 years, attaining the rank of commodore.

Private family services were held at Temple Isaiah, Lafayette. A public Celebration of Life Service will be held on Nov. 17, 2008, in Rossmoor at 1:30pm at the Hillside Clubhouse, Las Trampas Room.

In lieu of flowers, his children request that donations be made to Temple Isaiah, Lafayette, Habitat for Humanity, or to a charity of the donor's choosing.
