| Christian Science Healing of Carol Dannenbaum Alice Dannenbaum found spiritual answers in Christian Science that she wasn't able to find in the Reform Judaism of her upbringing. This excerpt is an example of the religious articles and poems she wrote for the church's publications. The daughter mentioned is Carol Dannenbaum. The illness occurred around 1916-1917 shortly after the family moved from San Francisco to San Mateo. |

| Clarence Strouse's Conversion Experience Two conversion stories are included here. One is an article from one of Strouse's addresses in Minneapolis. The other is an excerpt from Evangelist Dr. William E. Biederwolf’s sermon that includes Clarence Strouse’s conversion experience. Biederwolf uses this story many times in his sermons, even after the death of Strouse in 1918. Both Biederwolf and Strouse served as editors of the religious periodial, "The Consecrated Life." According to Mark Sidwell of J.S. Mack Library at Bob Jones University: “Among those evangelists less remembered today but whose careers are nonetheless illuminating is William Edward Biederwolf (1867-1939). He learned the trade from two of the more significant evangelists of his era, Chapman and B. Fay Mills. He served as a promoter of evangelism for both the Federal Council of Churches and the Interdenominational Association of Evangelists. He parlayed his evangelistic work into other ministries, notably leadership of the Winona Lake Bible Conference. William McLoughlin ranks Biederwolf as one of the "second five" evangelists of the period after Billy Sunday. Biederwolf's modestly successful career as an evangelist and particularly his writing about evangelism provide a window for viewing the history of American evangelism.” Sidwell classifies both Biederwolf and Clarence Strouse as early urban evangelists, whose message is geared towards an urban, middle and upper-middle class audience. |
