early 1850s travel to San Francisco via Panama Traveling to California from the east coast before railroads connected the two ends of the continent was a long journey no matter what route was chosen. All of the Loupes and Dannenbaums traveled by steamship back and forth across Panama on their multiple trips to and from San Francisco. But only Leopold Loupe traveled this route before 1855. The following excerpt from Fred Rosenbaum’s "Cosmopolitans: A Social and Cultural History of the Jews of the San Francisco Bay Area" describes the perilous journey.
Edwin Franko Goldman Speaks About Family in New Orleans This article focuses as much on Goldman's family as it does on his career. This would be Goldman's last trip to New Orleans as he died a year after this article. His cousin, Fannie Mae Goldman, is also mentioned.
Emil Loupe Obituary This death notice is filled with spelling and name inaccuracies, no doubt from lack of any immediate family in Seattle to supply that information. The reference to son Lewis is probably his brother Louis; Mrs. A. Cohen is probably his sister, Mrs. Aaron Kahn.
